The Buganda Road Magistrates Court has ordered for the immediate production of Dr Kizza Besigye such that he can be released on bail over charges of inciting violence.
Earlier in the morning, the High Court Judge Michael Elubu reduced the 30million shilling bail money that Buganda Road Court Grade one Magistrate Siena Owomugisha had imposed on Dr Kizza if he wanted to gain his temporary freedom to 3 million shillings cash so that he can be released.
Besigye’s lawyers led by Erias Lukwago immediately rushed to Diamond Trust Bank to pay the monies in question and also to secure his release order from Buganda Road Court which is trying him.
No sooner had the lawyers secured the release order than the prison officers who were guarding Besigye at High Court Cells whisked him away to prison saying that they did not have a production warrant to bring him to Buganda Road Court.
As a result Besigye’s lawyers had to plead with Buganda Road Magistrate Owomugisha to issue a production warrant directing Prisons to bring him to court this afternoon.
The lawyers argued that they had served the release order to Prison Officers who were at Court and they refused to acknowledge receipt and that’s why the Magistrate has been convinced to order for his return to Court this afternoon.
At the moment , Besigye’s lawyers are on the way to Luzira Prison to serve them with a production warrant so that they can come back with Besigye and he be released officially by Buganda Road Court before the day ends.
The prosecution alleges that on May 24th, 2022 at Arua Park in Shauriyako Parish in Kampala City, Besigye without lawful excuse made statements indicating that he desired to demonstrate, which could cause damage to property.
The protests by Besigye Were to mobilize Uganda to protest against the runaway commodity prices.
The increase in prices, which started in November 2021 has seen fuel prices rise by almost 2,000 Shillings.
