1 Mins read

Three people have died and nine others were injured in an accident which occurred in Migyera town council, along Kampala-Gulu highway this morning.

The accident involved taxi registration number UAX 303F travelling from Masindi to Kampala. According to Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Isah Ssemwogerere, the taxi lost control after a tyre burst and overturned killing the three people on the spot.

Ssemwogerere added that nine passengers have sustained injuries and were rushed to St Francis Health centre for treatment while the dead were transferred to Nakasongola Health Center IV. The deceased included two female adults and one juvenile whose identities had not been established by this afternoon.

Yesterday, the Traffic Police Spokesperson Faridah Nampiima told the media that the Police intend to work with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards to test the quality of car tyres on the road after getting reports that some mechanics were recycling old tyres, something that may be a cause of some accidents.

She explained that the Police had registered a number of accidents caused by tyre bursts last week in which 30 people sustained serious injuries. She was releasing a traffic report where a total of 411 accidents were registered in one week across the country leaving 73 people dead out of 437 victims.

Some of the accidents occurred in the districts of Mbarara, Nakasongola, Mubende, Budaka, Pakwachi and Mpigi in which taxis were involved in tyre bursts and left scores injured.
