Rwandan YouTuber Arrested For Allegedly Denying Genocide

1 Mins read

The Rwandan authorities have arrested an outspoken YouTuber on charges of denying the 1994 genocide.

If found guilty the former university lecturer, Aimable Karasira, could face more than a decade in jail.

In a statement the Rwanda Investigative Bureau said he had sown division in the country.

In a video posted last month Mr Karasira accused the governing Rwandan Patriotic Front of fuelling hate, and questioned some aspects of the genocide.

Rights groups criticise president Paul Kagame’s government for cracking down on free speech and misusing laws on genocide denial to round up critics.

An opposition party has called for Mr Karasira’s immediate release.
