The Health Ministry Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine has called an emergency meeting of the National COVID19 Taskforce to find ways of responding to the resurgence in the coronavirus.
According to a letter seen by this website has seen, the meeting is set to be held on Thursday and will form a temporary Taskforce to deal with the resurgence that has seen Intensive Care Unit (ICUs) in Mulago and Entebbe Hospitals filled.
Results of COVID-19 tests done on 24 May 2021 confirmed 207 new cases. The cumulative confirmed cases are now 44,281.
The team will include Permanent Secretaries and Under Secretaries. This is due to the absence of a cabinet that is expected to be announced soon.
There have been rumors that the government is planning to reinstate a lockdown to control the spread of the virus.
“Two days ago, we got 187 cases in one day so I can authoritatively tell you that the second wave of COVID-19 is here. Our ICUs and HDUs are full, we lost six young people in one week so be alert,” Dian said.
She added, “Don’t rule out a lock down because people are not following SOPs and infections are rising at a terrific speed. We are losing lives everyday and this is worrying us. The COVID-19 situation in the country now needs something to be done quickly and if that doesn’t happen, we are going to lose many lives unfortunately.”
