National Unity Platform presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has tasked the Electoral Commission to take charge of the 2021 general elections and ensure that it’s free and fair.
He made the remarks during a closed meeting with commission’s chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, where they petitioned over the brutality by police during their campaigns.
In the meeting, Bobi Wine together with other party officials tabled pictures of the brutality exhibited on them while they campaigned in different parts of the country.
He noted that the Commission does not seem to be fully in charge because it has failed to prevail over security agencies, who are using excessive force in the name of enforcing observance of Campaign Guidelines and SOPs for prevention of spread of COVID-19.
He expressed strong fear that his life as well as the lives of members of his team and supporters is in danger.
He reported that several scheduled campaign meetings had been blocked by Police over the past three weeks, and he had been denied access to radio stations in at least three districts.
Speaking to the media shortly after the meeting, Kyagulanyi revealed that it was agreed upon to reschedule their campaign program and go back to places where his campaigns were blocked.
Byabakama assured Bobi Wine and the nation that the institution he heads is still in charge of the electoral process.
He explained that police’s role in the electoral process is to ensure that Standard Operating Procedures against COVID-19 and other set guidelines are followed and enforced.
He urged the candidate and his supporters to observe the SOPs for the campaigns since everyone has an equal role to play in order to have a free and fair elections.
