Over 20 People Power Supporters Arrested In Illegal Protest

Police in Kampala has arrested over 20 supporters of People Power who staged illegal demonstration demanding for immediate arrest of Charles Olima alias Sipapa.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the National Unity Platform (People Power) supporters dressed in their red attire in a group of about 40 led by Fred Nyanzi Sentamu carried out a procession holding placards demanding for the arrest of Sipapa.

Sipapa is accused for the two incidents of shooting on the 30th August and 15th September 2020 at NUP offices located in Contafrica zone Kamwokya II Parish Central Division in Kampala City.

Onyango said the group blocked the Old Kira Road with logs, burning tyres to prevent any other road user to access it.

According to Onyango, these rowdy group of people vowed to continue demonstrating until Sipapa is arrested he however urged them to follow the law.

“Over 20 people have been arrested who engaged in the demonstration.

The suspects are being charged with illegal procession,” said Onyango in a statement issued on Thursday.

He said the suspects’ case files will be processed and submitted to Director of Public Prosecutions.

“All tyres used in the demonstration were picked from Nyanzi’s building. According to intelligence reports, more tyres are being ferried. Police has resorted order in the area and business has returned to normal,” Onyango said.

He urged NUP supporters that the government has institutions where they can channel their grievances other than taking the law in their hands.
