1 Mins read

At least 10 suspects have been apprehended in connection to the death of  Emmanuel Tegu, a third year veterinary student of Makerere University in Kampala who was killed  under unclear circumstances.

Tegu, a third-year student at Makerere University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Animal Production was last week on Sunday night attacked and badly beaten by a mob that allegedly mistook him for a thief.

According to Uganda Police , they received a tip-off and swung into action to his rescue, only that Tegu had been badly beaten and bruised by the mob which left him unconscious.

In a statement released on Monday, the spokesperson, Kampala metropolitan police, Patrick Onyango said that the investigations into the death of Tegu  have been intensified.

“Today, police carried out an intelligence led operation and arrested 10 suspects in connection to the death of Tegu. All the suspects are residents of Makerere University in Kampala,”he said.

He noted that the suspects are currently detained at Wandegeya Police Station pending interrogation.

“The suspects, whose identities will be disclosed after interrogation, are said to have participated in the mob action that led to the death of the student,”he noted.

He said there are other suspects who took off after receiving information of the death of the student, but their  teams are pursuing them.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was attacked at around 11:00 pm, near Lumumba hall, in Makerere University on Sunday night, but breathed his last on Saturday at 3:00 am, at Mulago hospital, a week after the incident.

However, Ugandans on Twitter are very angry and have started #JusticeForTegu because Tegu was allegedly beaten by LDUs contrary to what the Uganda Police said in its statement. The hashtag has been created to call for a stop of injustices caused by LDUs and also disarm them.

UgMirror will be giving updates on the entire investigation as it goes on.

May Tegu’s soul Rest in Peace.
