In less than a week in office, the president elect of Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye has reinstated the position of Prime Minister in the country for the first time in 22 years after it had been abolished in 1998.

The parliament approved Alain Guillaume Bunyoni as the Prime Minister. He was the former security minister and is also a member of the ruling party in Burundi.

They also appointed Prosper Bazombanza as the Vice President a position he held under the late President Nkurunziza in 2014-2015.

According to the country’s constitution, the prime minister is the head of government and the vice-president assists the president in the exercise of his duties.

The new prime minister however is under US government sanctions for his suspected role in violence and human rights violations during political unrest in 2015 in Burundi.

Government also announced that the late Pierre Nkurunziza who ruled Burundi for 15 years and passed away on 8th June will be buried this Friday in Gitega.
