Environment Ministry accuses Judiciary of wetland crisis in Uganda

1 Mins read

The Ministry of Water and Environment have accused the Judiciary of frustrating their efforts to conserve and protect wetlands in the country.

While addressing the media in Kampala on Wednesday, the water and environment Minister Sam Cheptoris noted that wetland encroachers always seek court injunctions whenever there are attempts to evict them off the wetlands.

He said the level of environmental degradation has moved down from 13% in 1994 to 8.9%.

“We need to step back and think as Ugandans about what will happen to our wetlands if the current trend of degradation is not halted, “he said.

He urged the court to join hands in protecting and conserving environment across the country.

“Some of these people when we try to evict them, go to court and obtain court order, this somehow frustrated our work.We need to step back and think as Ugandans about what will happen to our wetlands if the current trend of degradation is not halted, “he said.
