The Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has criticised and condemned the continuous acts of brutality against ordinary Ugandans by police officers and other security agencies.
He made the comments while giving his summon at Uganda Martyrs shrine, Namugongo over the weekend.
Dr. Lwanga said that excessive force used by police could lead to widespread discontent and hatred against the government which may lead to turmoil in the country.
Lwanga was making reference to the recent police brutality against Makerere University Students and Journalists.
“My brothers and sisters, the police officers stop torturing innocent civilians for nothing. These people you are torturing are tax payers and your salaries come from those people,” he said.
He added:” Why should police beat up innocent people, people who have done nothing wrong for instance the students of Makerere University; such actions can cause hatred against the president and the government,” he said.
He further cautioned girls who are lured into lucrative jobs abroad to be careful otherwise they risk losing their lives and being sold like slaves.
“There is new form of slave trade where young girls are deceived and lured into lucrative jobs abroad some of them end up losing their organs among others,” he said.
He also hailed the head of anticorruption unit in State House, Col. Edith Nakalema for her effort put towards fighting corruption and land grabbing in the country.
“There is increasing cases of corruption in the country, what madam Nakalema is doing is a good job and she should continue doing that. So, I want to thank her for the effort put in fighting corruption and land grabbing. As Catholics, religious leaders and other religions we fight against corruption and we don’t support it,” he said.
