MPs Kick Makerere’s Prof Nawangwe Out of Meeting Room

There was drama in parliament yesterday when the Makerere University Vice Chancellor  Prof Barnabas Nawangwe and the Chairperson of the University Council, Lorna Magara were dragged out of a meeting which was probing the 15% tuition increment at Makerere as well as the recent strike.

The meeting, which was strictly supposed to be attended by Members of Parliament on the Education Committee and the Minister for Higher Education Chrysostom Muyingo was yesterday delayed due to the process of kicking out the two Makerere officials on grounds that they were not invited.                                                                                                                                   Muyingo told the MPs that it was unfair to chase away the officials yet the letter asked him to appear with the officials. In his response, the Committee Chairperson Jacob Opolot asked Nawangwe and Magara to return on Wednesday (today).

The bitter MPs also wondered  why the Ministry of Education, Hon Janet Museveni failed to appear before the committee and instead chose to send Muyingo to represent her. Apparently, Janet has on several occasions sent Muyingo to represent her, an act MPs totally disagree with.

Allan Ssewanyana, the Makindye West MP requested the committee not to proceed without the Education Minister which MPs declined to accept.
