Reports coming in indicate that a joint military operation is on going at Makerere university halls to arrest students who are mobilizing fellows to join tomorrow’s strike.
Sources have revealed that teargas canisters and live bullets have been fired around Lumumba and Mitchell halls.
It is also believed that teargas has extend to the surrounding areas of Kikoni and Kikumu Kikumi.
Tuesday strike was announced by students’ leaders after their meeting with management aborted when Police raided the meet and attempted to arrest the student leaders.
The student leaders have since maintained that they will reject the 15% tuition increment.
It is worth noting that yesterday, the US Mission in Uganda issued a statement of concern on the violation of human rights by Military forces at the University.
“The U.S. Mission in Uganda is increasingly concerned about the violence at Makerere University in response to ongoing protests against the proposed tuition increases.
“Footage of security services attacking unarmed students in their residence halls and attacks on journalists covering the protests are especially disturbing.
“This heavy-handed response by security services is uncalled for, and is a direct affront to the freedoms of assembly, speech and expression guaranteed by Uganda’s constitution.
“We urge the Government of Uganda to allow all Ugandans to exercise their basic rights peacefully and without fear,” reads the statement.
