The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has re-affirmed her commitment towards ensuring that the rights of People with Disabilities (PWDs) are protected.

The Speaker said she had received a lot of complaints from PWDs about their marginalization in different spheres of life.

“I don’t even know if there is a PWD employed by Bundibugyo District Local Government in the town council,” Kadaga remarked while officiating at a women’s conference in Bundibugyo district on Sunday, 28 October 2018.

The Speaker promised to continue advocating for the interests of PWDs to be incorporated in public sectors such as health and justice among others.

She informed participants that Parliament directed the Ministry of Health to train nurses and other officials in the use of sign language for easy communication with the deaf.

During her recent visit to Rukungiri district, Kadaga pledged to send the relevant committee of Parliament to interface with persons with disabilities and also visit Bundibugyo.

“We are soon starting the budget cycle; I will send a committee to visit the PWDs unit and the school for the disabled in Rukungiri such that they make a comprehensive report to inform the budget process,” said Kadaga.

The Woman MP Bundibugyo, Hon Josephine Bebona, said the women’s conference provides a platform for discussion and finding solutions to issues ranging from economic empowerment, maternal and child health, gender inclusiveness, hygiene and sanitation, and girl child education.

The conference was organized under the theme “Economic empowerment and participation for women as one way of achieving middle income status”.
