Buyaga County MP Raises Concerns Over Economic Disparities Across Regions

1 Mins read

Buyaga County Member of Parliament, Barnabas Tinkasimire, has drawn attention to significant economic disparities between regions in Uganda, highlighting contrasting attitudes towards monetary values in different areas.

Reflecting on his recent visit to Arua, Tinkasimire remarked on the perceived low value of money in the region, stating, “In Arua, if you give someone Shs 1,000, they will praise you.” He contrasted this with the cultural norms in Bunyoro, where receiving Shs 1,000 might prompt someone to express gratitude by kneeling.

Tinkasimire’s observation underscores broader socioeconomic disparities across Uganda, where perceptions of wealth and economic value vary significantly between regions. The disparity is not only evident in the valuation of money but also in the overall economic opportunities and standards of living experienced by different communities.

The MP’s rhetorical question, “How does that person feel when they hear someone got Shs 500 million?” highlights the stark contrast between the everyday struggles faced by individuals in regions like Arua, where even small sums are highly valued, and the vast wealth enjoyed by a privileged few.

This statement brings attention to the need for equitable economic development policies and interventions aimed at addressing disparities and improving livelihoods across all regions of Uganda. Tinkasimire’s remarks serve as a call to action for policymakers to prioritize inclusive economic growth and ensure that prosperity is shared more equitably among all citizens.

As debates on wealth distribution and economic empowerment continue, Tinkasimire’s insights serve as a reminder of the complex realities faced by different communities across Uganda and the imperative for targeted interventions to promote inclusive development and reduce regional inequalities.
