Government has pledged to give shillings 5 million to each of the families of the people whose bodies have been recovered following floods in Mbale City last weekend.

Ahamada Washaki, the Mbale City Resident Commissioner says the President has directed that each of the families be given 5 million for each body that has been retrieved to help in the burial arrangements.

Over twenty bodies have been retrieved and 5000 families displaced in Mbale City as authorities continue to compile the list of the victims and identify the rest of the bodies.
In the last two days, the rescuers, mostly community volunteer divers, pulled-out 23 bodies, five cars and an unspecified number of motorcycles

“We are appealing to family members and relatives of these people stranded because of the floods. Please, come to the rescue of your family members as the government finds a solution,”said Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.

According to the authority, flash floods have emptied pit latrines into the water.
