Since her release earlier today, there have been reports that Dr Stella Nyanzi could contest for the Kampala Woman MP seat currently occupied by Nabilah Ssempala.
The ruling and quashing of Stella Nyanzi’s conviction definitely means that Nyanzi can now stand for political office.
The law states that anyone sentenced to a term exceeding six months is not qualified to stand for political office.
Nyanzi has been in jail since November 2018 in a case in which she was accused of cyber harassment and offensive communication against President Museveni and his mother.
Dr Nyanzi was in August 2019 been given an 18-month sentence but had already served nine months in Luzira Women’s Prison after publishing the verse that magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu said should never have been put in the public domain, describing it as “obscene” and “indecent” including suggestions which “could only be made by an immoral person.”
