Mabirizi Challenges Appointment of Justice Richard Buteera As Deputy Chief Justice

Last week, president Museveni appointed Justice Richard Buteera as the Deputy Chief Justice replacing Justice Owiny-Dollo who was has now taken on a new role as Chief Justice of Uganda.

However, city Lawyer Male Mabirizi who has recently been in the news for petitioning for Bobi Wine’s academic records has now petitioned the office of the Speaker of Parliament challenging the appointment of Richard Buteera as deputy Chief Justice.

According to Mabirizi, Richard Buteera was nominated as the new deputy chief justice when the position was not vacant.

the position was not advertised by the Judicial service commission as is required of them under article 144 (1) of the 1995 Ugandan constitution.

Justice Richard Buteera has been a justice of the Supreme court and he also served as a Justice of the Uganda Court of Appeal.

He was also appointed to serve on the Judicial Service Commission in September last year replacing Jotham Tumwesigye.

Justice Richard Buteera and Justice Alphonse Owniy-Dollo await confirmation from the parliamentary committee before they can take up their newly appointed roles.
