The\nUganda Association of External Recruitment Agencies (UAERA) have responded to\nMukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze\u2019s allegations on Labour externalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While\naddressing the press conference yesterday at Hotel Africana, the chairman of UAERA,\nMr Andrew Kameraho said that labelling of externalization of labour as slave\ntrade is totally uninformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\nlabelling of externalization of labour as slave trade is totally uninformed\nsince over 27,000 licensed workers are currently deployed in Jordan alone and\nSaudi Arabia has 28,000, and they all continue to carry out their work with no complaints.\nWhere issues arise, those are addressed through the recruitment firms.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nresponse further addressed the allegations by MP Nambooze that a once Doreen Magezi\nwas trafficked, put on a stall and sold to the highest bidder at $3000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\nDoreen Magezi was truly placed to work in Jordan to accompany called AlBasha\nCompany a licensed employing company and a member of R.A.A. in Jordan by\nMarphie International recruitment Agency,\u201d said Kameraho before adding that;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs\nit is the custom of the company and indeed as regulations demand, the company\nhas been in touch with Doreen ever since she got deployed. This kind of monitoring\nis done for all workers recruited officially through registered companies here\nin Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMid-last\nmonth (June 2019), Ms Doreen Magezi informed our operations desk of<\/p>\n\n\n\n
how\nshe was not feeling well. We closely monitored her situation through our agents\nuntil she made a decision that she can\u2019t work anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\narranged for her travel back where we even paid her air ticket to Entebbe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On\nthe Issue of Doreen being questioned by police upon arrival, Mr Kameraho\nrevealed that this is a standard procedure to document all the issued Doreen\ncould have encountered while working abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\ninvolvement of the police was purely to document any concerns that Doreen<\/p>\n\n\n\n
could\nhave had, and this is normal procedure for returning workers. It also involves<\/p>\n\n\n\n
counselling\nand medical check-up at Victoria hospital, which is the designate health\nfacility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kameraho\nalso reminded journalists that despite of the few challenges, Labour Externalization\nhas greatly contributed to the economy through remittances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo-date\nwe have $1.2 billion remitted back to the country by migrant workers, half<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of\nthat about $600 million from the Middle East alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s\ntherefore a sector we need to nurture as a country for alternative employment<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and\nnational development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\nis worth noting that; Currently, Uganda has over 140,000 Ugandans, working in\nthe Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over\nUS $ 500,000,000 (Five Hundred Million) is remitted annually by these migrant\nworkers. US$ 870,000,000 (Eight Hundred Seventy Million dollars) is remitted to\nUganda Annually from other parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This\naccounts for US $ 1,370,000,000 (One Billion, Three hundred Seventy Million\ndollars) of remittances from all over the world to Uganda a substantial\ncontribution to our Economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nremittances have positively impacted on the society and our reporter moved to\nthe grassroots to profile some of the Ugandans who went abroad for employment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
