Damon Wamara, a child rights activist has noted\nthat there are unidentified people who are making living off the street\nchildren and have made it a profit-making business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Appearing on NBS TV Morning Breeze, Wamara said\nthat people responsible for helping these street kids are paying deaf ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis a profit-making business. Someone is making\na living off these children and we\u2019re fuelling this business by giving these\nchildren money,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said Police have arrested some people but the\nring leader has not yet been singled out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His comments came shortly after six children perished\nwhen a perimeter wall at Lohana High School collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that in 2017, the retract renumeration\nfound out that there are 1500 street children in only four districts which\ninclude Iganga, Jinja, Mbale and Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the influx of children on the streets is due\nto the fact that urban centres are a pull factor with opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Urban centres are places where street\nchildren can look for a cheap labour or become a source of cheap labour,\u201d he\nnoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said, this is because streets look more\nappealing to them than their homes because of the fallen parental system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We have failed to provide for them. We are\nfailing as community leaders to be gate keepers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that the biggest problem is the poverty\nmindset however, there are struggling families who have managed to provide for\ntheir homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He appealed to the public and government to put\nin place different measures that will help to mitigate and stop the flocking of\nchildren on the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We need to give them skills that get them\noff the streets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
