{"id":9709,"date":"2019-06-14T09:59:21","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T06:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=9709"},"modified":"2019-06-16T15:27:43","modified_gmt":"2019-06-16T12:27:43","slug":"how-labour-externalization-has-changed-the-lives-of-many-ugandans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/14\/how-labour-externalization-has-changed-the-lives-of-many-ugandans\/","title":{"rendered":"How Labour Externalization Has Changed the Lives of Many Ugandans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over the years, it has been\nUganda\u2019s mandate to ensure her citizens are well off in terms of welfare by reducing\nunemployment and underemployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce unemployment, labour\nmigration has been looked at as one of the best options and indeed this system\nis making wonders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Government of Uganda,\nthrough the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development put in place\nopportunities that streamlined access to decent employment opportunities for\nits nationals abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decent employment\nopportunities have been advertised through genuine recruitment agencies under\nthe supervision of their umbrella body, Uganda Association of External\nRecruitment Agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Uganda Association of\nExternal Recruitment Agencies in place, protection of migrant workers, observation\nof their human rights and welfare in accordance with the international labour\nstandards have been observed and this has helped many Ugandans work abroad and\nremit money home which has improved the lives of their families and relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Uganda has over\n140,000 Ugandans, working in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over US $ 500,000,000 (Five\nHundred Million) is remitted annually by these migrant workers. US$ 870,000,000\n(Eight Hundred Seventy Million dollars) is remitted to Uganda Annually from\nother parts of the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This accounts for US $\n1,370,000,000 (One Billion, Three hundred Seventy Million dollars) of\nremittances from all over the world to Uganda a substantial contribution to our\nEconomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remittances have\npositively impacted on the society and our reporter moved to the grassroots to\nprofile some of the Ugandans who went abroad for employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Obbo Zephaniah Builds Entebbe International\nDream School<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you reach Entebbe\nInternational School located at Bugonga, Entebbe, you are convinced to think\nthat it is one of the best upcoming schools being set up by one of the city\ntycoons or an investor to tap into Uganda\u2019s education sector but you will\neasily get shocked upon getting facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Obbo\u2019s big\nbrother, Julius Othieno who is the care taker of the school, Obbo went to Abu\nDhabi in 2014 and has since set his goal of working there for 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entebbe-International-School-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entebbe-International-School.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entebbe-International-School-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entebbe-International-School-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entebbe-International-School-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entebbe-International-School-640x427.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Entebbe-International-School-681x454.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Entebbe-International-School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cObbo has been very exemplary at work and has\nalways excelled and rated as the best employer of the year while there. He\nsends money here and we have managed to develop this facility that will live\nlong even after us,\u201d explained Othieno before adding that; \u201cThe plan is big\nbecause it is supposed to be a 3 storied building and Obbo has set up a\nstrategy of working there for at least 10 years in order to achieve his dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe make sure that the money\nis managed well so that when he comes back, he will appreciate whatever is on\nground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked about the challenges,\nOthieno says it\u2019s very tricky in that its capital intensive and requires a lot\nof creativity to minimize costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAny challenge that comes we\ntry to make sure we minimize and get over it in a very creative way but it\u2019s\nvery challenging since the school is still incomplete to the desired level and\nstandards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor this year we have a\nbudget close to Shs50million to do the finishing and we must raise it because\nit\u2019s Obbo\u2019s target for this year. &nbsp;As he works, he has to keep sending\nmoney on a monthly basis as we try to do whatever little that can be done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Othieno, the\nschool for the first year 2017 was able to sit 7 candidates for PLE and 5\ncandidates came in division one with the best getting aggregate 6, the rest in\ndivision two with aggregate 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Othieno encourages parents to\nbring their kids to the school since they are improving day by day and\naffordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Othieno says he works with his\nbrother Obbo mainly in terms of financial management, Strategy and Plan\nsetting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two talk on a daily basis\nfor purposes of planning and transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He believes that if they put\nin extra effort to the project of 10 years, they can achieve it within 5 five\nyears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benon Kunywana Aspires to\nBecome Bujjuko\u2019s Strong Land Lord<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benon Kunywana, 31 left Uganda\nin 2014 to go and work as a security guard in Abu Dhabi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kunywana earns a monthly\nsalary of 3400dirham which is equivalent to Shs3.4million that he has since\nsaved to come back in his first vacation and put up spacious rental houses in\nBujjuko town, Wakiso district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure him by then to fly abroad\nfor work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He lauds Uganda Association of\nExternal Recruitment Agencies for helping many young Ugandans and stressed that\nthey should ignore wrong information that things are impossible once one gets\ninto United Arab Emirates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need guns to do\nsecurity guard jobs in the United Arab Emirates and in fact it\u2019s more of\ncustomer care and we are trained right away when we reach there on how to do\nour jobs,\u201d Kunywana says before revealing that he acquired a certificate from\nthe National Security Institute of UAE in which he was the best student in his\nclass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"745\" more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kunywana currently has a plot\nof land in Bujjuko town on which he has established a structure with four\nrental units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure is in its last\nstage of completion and expects to finish everything before he goes back for a two-year\ncontract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" genuine recruitment agencies and utilize the\nchances upon availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arinaitwe Eddy of Buloba\nDefies All Odds to Put Back Smile to Widowed Mum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arinaitwe Eddy is an orphan\nwho lost his dad when he was in Senior one while they lived in Kamwokya and his\nmum tried all she could to raise him and his siblings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This much needed effort saw\nEddy graduate from Kyambogo University with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Industrial\nFine Art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, one year down the\nroad Eddy failed to get a job after campus and it\u2019s at this point that he\ndecided to look for jobs abroad with the help of the mum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mum says she could not\nstand seeing her son seated at home with no job so she advised her son to go to\nand give it a try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On reaching in the United Arab\nEmirates, Eddy did not forget the situation back home so he immediately started\nsending money home and the mum bought a plot of land in Buloba-Kilinda at\nShs15million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With hard work, Eddy sent more\nmoney home which was used to put up a residential house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kigula Eric Left Teaching Job\nfor Abu Dhabi Supervision Opportunity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After realizing that earnings from his job could not sustain the family and their needs, Kigula Eric of kitemu Parish, Nsangi Sub county, Wakiso District and a former teacher at Luwero girls abandoned his teaching job to go and seek for greener pasture in Abu Dhabi (UAE) where he worked as customer service personnel and later a supervisor for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" and find that it was actually a different story because the\njob is to welcome people with a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He told this reporter that his\nwife Jane Kigula is his manager back home whom he sends money and she\nimplements all their family plans but he also ensures that he comes once every\nyear to check on his family and progress of their projects on his own air\nticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane Kigula says she cannot find\nenough words to thank Uganda Association of External Recruitment Agencies for\nhaving helped the husband to go find a genuine job abroad because their life\nhas since greatly improved to better considering the situation, they were\npreviously living in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" years he has worked in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She encouraged women to always\nkeep away from bad groups and company because these groups tend to divert\nfellow women from focusing on developmental matters and end up messing their\nmarriages especially in situations when their husbands have left here to go and\nlook for money abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane says she talks with the\nhusband on a
