Opposition\nin Parliament has called for the amendment of National honours and award act\n2001 to clearly stipulate the qualifications for the heroes who have to be\ncelebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While\naddressing the media at parliament on Tuesday Betty Nambooze the spoken person\nof the shadow cabinet who also doubles as the Member of Parliament Mukono Municipality\nstated that the occasion to commemorate heroes\u2019 day has now been turned into a\nmere ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nnoted that some of the people who are awarded do not meet the qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nthe amended heroes act, Nambooze wants heroes to be identified outside\npoliticians and the army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nurged for the clear way of honouring\nand securing places where heroes\u2019 biography can be kept and their home be made\nnational heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nalso wants clear procedures to vet those who should qualify to be heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\ncited the examples of the army officers who were awarded medals for obstructing\nJustice Catherine Bamugemereire while\ninspecting the controversial land in Mutungu which she said it is an insult to\nthe country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nnoted that a person is called hero when he has been noted for great and brave\nactions, nobility and great outstanding achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo,\nwhat outstanding achievements, what act of great courage did the soldiers who\nstopped Bamugemereire from accessing contested land attained?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nfurther protested against government decisions to award the late Lutaakome\nKayiira with a medal before the report of his assassination has been released\n32 years down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKayiira\nwas murdered on the 9th of March 1987 ,32 Years later, is being awarded with a\nmedal that is being given to his sons when the whole country wants Mr. Museveni\ninstead to release a report about his death,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nwarned Kayiira\u2019s family that the life of their father for which Museveni is\npurporting to award him a medal was not about the family issues but national\nissues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
