{"id":9577,"date":"2019-06-06T00:15:47","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T21:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=9577"},"modified":"2019-06-06T00:15:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T21:15:54","slug":"caf-champions-league-esperance-ordered-to-return-medals-and-face-wydad-casablanca-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/06\/caf-champions-league-esperance-ordered-to-return-medals-and-face-wydad-casablanca-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Caf Champions League: Esperance ordered to return medals and face Wydad Casablanca again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esperance have been ordered to return the African Champions League trophy and to replay the second leg of the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tunisian side led 1-0 in Saturday&#8217;s second leg but Moroccan opponents Wydad Casablanca\u00a0left the pitch after an equaliser they scored was disallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wydad wanted the video assistant referee to check if the goal should stand but the system was not working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Confederation of African Football (Caf) said the second leg will be replayed at a neutral venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1-1 draw from the first leg in Morocco stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The replay will be after the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, which ends on 19 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafonline.com\/en-us\/newscenter\/news.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Caf statement<\/a>&nbsp;said &#8220;conditions of game and safety were not met&#8221; in the second leg and made clear Esperance players must return their winners&#8217; medals as well as the trophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Play in the second leg was halted after Wydad thought they had equalised on 59 minutes through Walid El Karti&#8217;s header. It was disallowed for an infringement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VAR system was visible on the side of the pitch but the players had not been told it was not in use because of a malfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The referee eventually awarded the victory to three-time champions Esperance after a 95-minute delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wydad&#8217;s president said the club was &#8220;the victim of a scandal&#8221; and Caf subsequently called an Executive Committee meeting where the decision to replay the game was made.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Esperance have been ordered to return the African Champions League trophy and to replay the second leg of the final.
