A\ntotal of 163 cases of media violations have been recorded in the country\naccording to the press freedom index 2018 which include blocking access to news\nscenes, assaulting journalists, habitually arrest and causing malicious damage\nto journalists\u2019 equipment among others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the release of the report yesterday at\nImperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, Robert Ssempala, the Executive Director Human\nRights Network for Journalists Uganda noted that police is still the leading\noffender of media violations in the country accounting for 53% of media\nviolations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Resident\nDistrict Commissioners, Uganda Communication Commission have also been named\namong the rampant media violators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cImpunity has persisted with more state agents\nespecially the Police and the army which is a part of UPDF,\u201d Ssempala\nstated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nreport recommends that the Uganda Police Force takes transparent and public\ndisciplinary proceedings against police officers who violate freedoms and the\nrights of journalists especially during field operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the situation where the police officers\nclaimed to have taken the disciplinary action against the errant officers, the\ndetails of such disciplinary actions should be shared with public,\u201d Ssempala\nreads the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ssempala\nnoted that the implicated Police men or women and their leaders or officers\nshould be held personally liable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nnoted that Police should undertake robust and expeditious investigations of case reported by\njournalists where they are attack in the line of duty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
