The\nRt. Hon. Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, has urged legislators to\nengage in and support tree planting and restoring the environment so as to\nmitigate the adverse effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nhis communication from the chair at the resumption of plenary from a two weeks\nbreak, Oulanyah noted that there has been a marked increase in natural\ndisasters in Uganda and across the world as a result of climate change and an\nupset in the natural order of the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFamilies\nhave been badly affected by lightning, hailstorms and turbulent winds in\nKiruhura and Buyende districts and we need to do something about it,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oulanyah\nadded that lives and property have been lost in the violent storms as a result\nof the destruction of tree cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHomesteads,\nschools and churches in the countryside are extremely exposed bare; it should\nbe a wakeup call to us to plant trees and protect swamps for the good of the\nenvironment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nDeputy Speaker urged fellow MPs to sensitize the population about the\nadvantages of planting trees and protecting vegetation since they act as wind\nbreakers and restore natural balance in the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt\nthe onset of the rainy season, I urge MPs to set an example in their\ncommunities by planting trees in their home compounds, compounds of churches\nand schools and along roads,\u201d Oulanyah said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\nfurther noted that he has taken the initiative and will next week commission\ntree planting in seven schools in his community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oulanyah\nalso urged the Ministry of Water and Environment and its agencies to take up\nthe mantle in sensitizing communities about the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\nneed you to go out there and talk to people about the safe management of the\nenvironment and mobilize tree seedlings to be given out to the local\npopulation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oulanyah\nsaid action needs to be taken on the protection of the environment otherwise\nclimate change will wipe out countries and the entire continent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
