The Uganda Government has assured the\ninternational community of its commitment towards Social Protection initiatives\nthat give momentum to gender equality and women empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking Wednesday during the ongoing\n63rd<\/sup> session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) taking\nplace at the UN headquarters in New York, the Gender Ministry Permanent Secretary\nPius Bigirimana noted that Uganda was already making strides in the area of\nwomen empowerment through various programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He observed that with 51% of the 37.7\nmillion Ugandans being women and the young people below the age of 30 years\naccounting for 80% of the population, it was imperative for the government to\nrun a progressive Social Protection Policy Framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cImplementation of Social Protection\ninitiatives are a priority commitment to the Uganda Government and this is\narticulated in the Policy Instruments like Vision 2040, the Second National\nDevelopment Plan, the National Social Protection Policy 2015, as well as the\nvarious Sector specific policies and strategies.\u201d Bigirimana said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bigirimana is heading Uganda\u2019s\ndelegation at the annual international assembly that specifically discusses and\nsets the global agenda on gender equality and the empowerment of women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme focuses on Social\nProtection Systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure\nfor gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assembly being attended by\nrepresentatives of UN Member States, UN entities, and accredited\nnon-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world opened on\nMarch 11th<\/sup> and runs up to 22nd<\/sup> March, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The permanent secretary informed the\nplenary that Uganda had developed the National Policy and Action Plan on\nElimination of Gender Based Violence, 2016, which is guiding interventions for\nprevention, response and ending impunity for all forms of Gender Based Violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cited the Uganda Women\nEntrepreneurship Programme (UWEP) which has to date extended direct capital to\n117, 274 women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also have the Youth Livelihood\nProgramme (YLP), which supports youth groups to undertake business enterprises.\nThis has reached a total of 223, 642 beneficiary youth of which 101, 887 are\nfemale (46%) and 121,755 are male in the last five years.\u201d He added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the elderly, Bigirimana revealed\nthat the national rollout of the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment\n(SAGE) for older persons is being pursued. He said currently there are 157, 493\nbeneficiaries, the majority of whom are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also enumerated the Investments in\ninfrastructure particularly, transport, electricity and renewable energy that\nhave supported women including those living in rural and hard-to-reach areas,\naccess public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a move to increase women\u2019s economic\nstatus and contribution to national development, Bigirimana revealed that\ngovernment was reviewing the current procurement laws to ensure that women are\nentitled to a 30% quota of the available public procurement jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWomen have also devised innovative\napproaches that build on traditional mechanisms for social protection through\ninformal credit and savings groups, mutual assistance and self-help schemes\nwhich are essential for the livelihoods of household and communities,\u201d he\nnoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As members of the Village Health Teams\n(VHTs), women are involved in health promotion, mobilizing communities to\naccess immunization, mosquito nets, HIV & AIDS counselling and testing\nservices, antenatal as well as hygiene and sanitation facilities, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bigirimana reaffirmed Government of\nUganda\u2019s commitment to implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, an\ninstrument that sets a global standard for gender equality and women\u2019s\nempowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called upon Development Partners and\nall Ugandans to support the government efforts to implement Uganda\u2019s prioritized\nSocial Protection initiatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
