International\nand Domestic Civil Society Organizations have on Wednesday 20th proposed that\nthe government puts in place policies and programs including legislation to\naddress unpaid care work by girls and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ndemand was made at the side-lines of the 63rd session of the Commission on the\nStatus of Women at the United Nations headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rita\nAciro, the Executive Director, Uganda Women\u2019s Network (UWONET) said gender\nparity cannot be achieved when the majority of the women are engaged in the\ndomestic sphere providing services that do not have an economic benefit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\nneed to achieve gender parity and that cannot be achieved if not without\ncombined effort \u201cshe added<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aciro\nsaid if women cannot get out of the domestic sphere to do economically gainful\nwork and also participate in decision making, then they will always be left\nbehind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nher remarks at the event, the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, noted that\nit is important to draw attention and advocacy on the issue and have partners\nin the community to champion the cause. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nSpeaker undertook to work with women parliamentarians and the Minister in\ncharge of Sustainable Development Goals, Mary Karooro Okurut, to raise\nconsciousness about the issue until it becomes government policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
