Speaker\nof parliament, Rt Hon Rebecca Alitwalla Kadaga has endorsed a proposal that 30\npercent of all government contracts are reserved for women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This\nwas during United Nations 63rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women\non the topic \u201cSide event on Uganda\u2019s success in Implementing Inclusive\nSustainable Infrastructure for Promoting Gender Equality and the Empowerment of\nWomen and girls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nadded that she has been an advocate for women related issues for a period of\ntime and was glad to participate in the ongoing 63rd UN Commission on the\nStatus of Women, in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\nendorsed a proposal for the review of Uganda\u2019s procurement laws so as to ensure\nthat 30 percent of all government contracts are reserved for women,\u201d she posted\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She urged that she would like to for example\nsee in the adverts that UNRA puts out that the project will go to youth and\nwomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\nwould like to see a situation where we also break the bid bonds into components\nwhere women and youth are able to participate,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nfurther added that a bid bond is issued as part of a supply bidding process by\na contractor to provide a guarantee that the supplier will execute the contract\nunder the terms at which they bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBid\nbonds lock out women because of the enormous amounts of money needed,\u201d she\nechoed <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nspeaker also voiced her concerns on accessibility by women and vulnerable\npersons to social services thus urge government to ensure that socio economic\ninfrastructure responds better to the priorities of women and girls at\ngrassroots level and that governments accelerate ongoing efforts to support\nwomen owned business to participate in government funded infrastructure\nprojects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
