The\nSpeaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has called upon the church leaders to\nencourage people to adopt family planning methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kadaga\nsaid the Catholic Church has from time immemorial preached against families\npracticing family planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\nchurch leaders play a very instrumental role in shaping societies; the church\nhowever, does not want to talk about family planning and shuns it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kadaga\nadded that modern family planning methods plays an instrumental role in helping\npeople raise families they can manage and also control population growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kadaga\nmade these remarks at the launch of the RISE, a modern family planning method\ncampaign under the theme; \u201cEmpowering women through innovative approaches to\nsocial protection\u201d run by Marie Stopes Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kadaga\nadded that young people need targeted sensitisation to help them understand the\ndanger of early pregnancies and the lack of family planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\ncensus results of the districts show information on children who have been\nmarried and have had children at a tender age. This is something that needs to\nbe handled by the campaign,\u201d Kadaga said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nSpeaker called for implementation of the\nproject on the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\nIslands people have always been left out because they are in clusters so this\ntime round, they need to be involved in this campaign,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nMinister of State for Primary Health Care, Dr. Joyce Moriku said that Uganda\nhas been lagging behind in terms of adopting family planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWomen\nface challenges in adopting family planning like fear of the health facilities,\ntheir partners opposing them and the side effects that might arise,\u201d Moriku\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moriku\nadded that government supports the exercise because people need to be\ncounselled about the side effects of these drugs and involving their partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur\nPresident made a strong commitment to support family planning and the\nGovernment has committed US$5 million annually to expand the efforts on family\nplanning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ncountry representative of Marie Stopes, Dr. Carole Sekimpi said the programme\nintends to reduce maternal mortality and increase the use of modern\ncontraceptives in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want to increase awareness on the benefits\nof modern contraceptives; access to quality family planning services and access\nto age appropriate sexual reproductive health information for adolescents,\u201d Dr.\nSekimpi added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UNFPA\nrepresentative, Tabitha Miranda said that they are trying to address Uganda\u2019s\npopulation challenge and improve family planning uptake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She\nsaid that UNFPA will be targeting 19 districts including Karamoja and 12\nrefugee-hosting districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want to track resource investment in family planning; review health education related policies to fill knowledge gaps; develop a national engagement strategy on sexual and health reproduction among others,\u201d Miranda said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
