The\nMinister of State for Tourism, Hon Godfrey Kiwanda has refuted media reports\nthat he is promoting a campaign aimed at using curvy women as a tourist\nattraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nhis statement during on Wednesday, 13 February 2019, Kiwanda said that his\nparticipation at the launch of the contest was to support a beauty standard\nwhich is in line with the country\u2019s native cultural preferences and not using\ncurvy women as tourist attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\ndo strongly believe that women just like men should not be taken as\ncommodities. There are some people who have been insinuating that I said\ntourists would come to see women with curves; on the contrary, I meant tourism\nbegins with the people,\u201d said Kiwanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kiwanda\nrecently launched a beauty pageant whose aim is to organise a beauty pageant\nfor curvy women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nmedia quoted Kiwanda as saying that the pageant is a strategy to promote the\ntourism industry, and will involve sexy curvaceous women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In\nParliament, Kiwanda who quoted the story of creation in Genesis Chapter 1 of\nthe Bible said that the idea of appreciating people is not evil since it\nstarted with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter\nthe creation of man and woman, God looked at them and appreciated his work;\nwhen we appreciate the goodness in us, we are also praising God,\u201d said\nKiwanda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nMinister\u2019s statement received mixed reactions from Members of Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nMinister of State for Housing, Hon Chris Baryomunsi cautioned the media against\nmisrepresenting information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat\nKiwanda said was that tourism involves people and he went graphically to\ndescribe the different ways that Ugandans dance. At no point did he say that\ncurvy women should be used as tourist attractions,\u201d said Baryomunsi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hon.\nElijah Okupa applauded the Minister for his contribution to the tourism sector\nsaying that the number of tourists visiting the country had increased since he\nbecame a minister. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis\nis not the time for us to attack him; we should instead encourage him. If he\nmade any mistake, we should not be fast to criticise him,\u201d Okupa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hon.\nElizabeth Karungi said that what the Minister did is good for the country\u2019s\ntourism sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor\nmany years in Uganda, the beauty contests have been for skinny ladies while the\ncurvy women had never been recognized. I want to encourage the Minster to\ncontinue because there are people who admire the curvy women,\u201d said Karungi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hon.\nHellen Grace Asamo said that the constitution gives Ugandans the right of\nexpression and association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think the women who registered for the contest had anything wrong with them and it is not the Minister who registered them. How I wish there would be a very big contest for the PWDs,\u201d said Asamo. Rubanda MP, Hon. Prossy Akampulira Mbabazi said that whilst the Minister\u2019s motive for the Tourism Ministry is good, he should desist from describing women\u2019s bodies.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
