President Yoweri Museveni has strongly urged the\npeople of Tororo District in particular and Uganda in general to cherish unity\nby embracing the first principle of NRM, which is patriotism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is not good to celebrate NRM Day without\nunderstanding NRM principles. NRM members of Tororo District you need to pull up\nyour socks on Principle One of NRM, Patriotism,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The President made the remarks today while\nofficiating at the 33rd<\/sup> anniversary celebrations commemorating the\nNRM\/NRA liberation day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The colourful ceremony that was characterized by a\nspectacular parade by Officers and Men of the Uganda Armed Forces together with\nthe Uganda Police, Prisons Services and members of the public, was held at\nMuwafu Primary School grounds in Nabuyoga Sub-County in Tororo District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The function ran under the theme, \u2018 A Moment\nof Glory that Set a New Chapter for Unity, Peace and Prosperity in Uganda.\u2019 <\/em><\/strong> It was also graced by Vice President, Mr. Edward\nKiwanuka Ssekandi, Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, Prime\nMinister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Deputy Prime Minister Al Hajji Kirunda Kivejinja,\ntraditional leaders, ministers and Members of Parliament, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n President Museveni advised Ugandans to be patriotic\nand think all the time about Uganda but not individual tribes. He illustrated\nhis point by calling the Acting LC5 Chairperson of Tororo District Ms. Stella\nImukutet together with her councillors to the podium to demonstrate unity that\nthe leaders in Tororo should be embracing instead of fomenting disunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI have held the first Tororo Council meeting here\ntoday,\u201d he said amid thunderous ululation from the gathering that was composed\nof both Iteso and Dopadhola, the two main tribes in the district. \u2018I am very\nhappy to see you celebrating NRM day together. I am happy to see that the Iteso\ncame to the function,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The President who exhaustively explained to the\ngathering the mistakes of the pre-independence governments that promoted\nsectarianism, further elaborated the principle of patriotism by stating that\nloving Uganda alone was not enough as we need the people of East Africa and\nAfrica in general for our prosperity in terms of bigger and wider markets for\nour products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also enumerated other principles of NRM that\ninclude socio-economic transformation and democracy adding that in terms of\nsocio-economic transformation, there is need for wananchi to exit from\ntraditional to modern profit-oriented agriculture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr. Museveni pointed out that the people of the area had not done enough in the sector of income generating activities at household levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He, therefore, pledged to invite leaders from the wider Bukedi Sub-Region along with their LC3 Chairpersons to his demonstration farm in Kityeterera in Mayuge District, Busoga Sub-Region to see what can be done in a small piece of land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He reminded the people of Uganda of their roles to\ncreate wealth in their homes while the government continues with its own of\ninfrastructure development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018I know my Katala (role). You don\u2019t have to waste\ntime to remind me. What remains to be done is in my head,\u2019 he said and\nenumerated the roads in the area that are to be worked on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Regarding the issues of job creation, President\nMuseveni asked visitors from Kampala at the function to pass via Tororo Town to\nsee for themselves the mushrooming industries in the area that are providing\nemployment to the youth and others that will, on completion, also provide thousands\nof jobs to the youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSince the beginning of colonialism, we now have a\nfactory that manufactures steel from iron ore. In the past, we were recycling\nold steel but now we have a factory for iron ore to the final product \u2013steel,\u2019\nhe pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The President later launched the Universal Primary\nEducation (UPE) Book that spells out the history of the policy that came into\neffect in 1997 and the achievements so far registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr. Museveni said the idea that was introduced in the 1996 General Election Campaigns had bore tremendous fruits because in 1986 only 2.5 million children were in primary school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He observed that as of today, over 8 million children are attending UPE and 670,000 children sat the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) in one year alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He added that in the Universal Secondary Education\n(USE) programme, the number has risen from over 900, 000 to 1.8 million\nchildren in secondary schools adding that when those in the Universities and\nTertiary Institutions are included, the number rises to 10 million children in\nschools. He said that this represents one quarter of the total population of\nthe country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He explained that all this was possible because of the NRM Government\u2019s prioritization policy following the improvement of the economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He said other programmes, such as compensation for the cattle lost and payment of veterans, among others, had to be put on hold in favour of universal education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet\nMuseveni, introduced her team to the gathering. It comprised former Ministers\nof Education that included Hon. Geraldine Bitamazire under whose reign the UPE Progamme\nwas started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hon.
