Despite\nthe threat to be axed by Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, Makerere\nUniversity staff have vowed no to return to work unless their suspended fellow\nstaff are reinstated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makerere\nUniversity is the oldest University in Uganda and is well known for staging\ndifferent strikes right from students to University staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last\nyear over 40 lecturers were terminated on the issues regarding sexual\nharassment, insubordination among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Last week, Chairperson Makerere University\nStaff Association, Dr Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu was suspended and ordered to hand\nover office of which he remained defiant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\nMonday 21st<\/sup> January 2019, lecturers at the same institute laid down their\ntools as the semester begins<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some\nstudents found at the University revealed that no lectures were taking place\nand many lecturer rooms were locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto the Vice chairperson Makerere University Staff Association, Edward Mwavu, lecturers\nhad resolved to lay down tools in objection to new amendment to the University\nHuman Resource policy which gives the University Council powers to dismiss any\nstaff who has a case before court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If\nI Edward Mwavu has a criminal case perhaps brought up by anyone to court, it\ncould be true or an allegation. At that juncture the University will have to\ntake up the case and dismiss me even if I am not yet guilty or guilty. They even\nsay that even if court finds me innocent, they can’t be forced to reverse their\ndecision,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We\nhad an engagement with various institutions of government which are concerned\nand finally last week on Friday we received a base structure. I don’t want you to\nquote that we received cash,” Mwavu added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makerere\nUniversity lecturers have condemned the manner in which their chairperson was\nsuspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lecturers\nhave also criticised the tendency by the University Vice Chancellor to suspend\nor fire his critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
