{"id":7515,"date":"2019-01-10T07:05:07","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T04:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=7515"},"modified":"2019-01-10T07:05:10","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T04:05:10","slug":"opposition-leader-named-winner-in-dr-congo-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/10\/opposition-leader-named-winner-in-dr-congo-poll\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition leader named winner in DR Congo poll"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi has won the Democratic Republic of Congo&#8217;s tightly contested presidential vote, the electoral commission says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provisional results put him ahead of another opposition candidate Martin Fayulu, and the ruling coalition&#8217;s Emmanuel Shadary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If confirmed, Mr Tshisekedi will be the first opposition challenger to win since the DR Congo gained independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current President Joseph Kabila is stepping down after 18 years in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had promised DR Congo&#8217;s first orderly transfer of power since the country&#8217;s independence from Belgium in 1960.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The election outcome was initially expected to be announced on Sunday. The interim result can still be challenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early hours of Thursday the head of DR Congo&#8217;s National Electoral Commission (Ceni), Corneille Nangaa, said Mr Tshisekedi had received 38.5% of the vote and had been &#8220;provisionally declared the elected president&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full results were, with turnout reportedly 48%:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Felix Tshisekedi &#8211; 7 million votes<\/li><li>Martin Fayulu &#8211; 6.4 million votes<\/li><li>Emmanuel Shadary &#8211; 4.4 million votes<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Tshisekedi, who is the son of late veteran opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi, has promised to make the fight against poverty his priority.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi has won the Democratic Republic of Congo&#8217;s tightly contested presidential vote, the electoral commission says.
