President Yoweri Museveni has todaymet with a delegation of Giants Club investors, led by the founders of Great Plains Africa, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, who are interested in investing in the conservation and high-end tourism with over US30 million dollars to invest in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Giants Club is an\ninitiative of Space for Giants that\ngives the political, financial and technical muscle to get work done. It unites\nsitting or former Heads of State of the four countries \u2013 Botswana, Kenya, Gabon\nand Uganda \u2013 that hold half of Africa’s remaining elephants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the meeting that\ntook place this afternoon at State House Entebbe, the leader of the delegation,\nMr. Dereck Joubert told President Museveni that they have so far been able to\nbuild tourism and conservation camps in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya and were now\nworking on creating one in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe deal with rich\ninfluential people that can talk about Uganda. We are also connectors between\ntourism, conservation and communities. We don\u2019t need money from the Government\nof Uganda; we just need our investment to be taken seriously and not be caught up\nin bureaucracies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Museveni welcomed\nthe investors to the country and informed them that the greatest challenge to\nconservation in Uganda is necessity where very many people in the rural areas\nare dependent on land for charcoal and food yet practice pre-industrial methods\nof agriculture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that this\nwould be solved through encouraging people to shift to commercial agriculture\nand participate in industrial and service sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHere in Africa, the\nconflict between man and nature is by default because man is where he is not\nsupposed to be. Man, therefore, becomes a parasite to family and nature\nespecially in the rural areas but we can reverse the situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Museveni also\nadvised the investors to employ young people in the tourism sector who can work\nas tour operators in the nearby communities such that they can learn the\nimportance of tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSome people keep\nasking us if animals are more important than them. But we have explained to the\npeople that tourism brings in more money than the coffee in Uganda,\u201d he\nremarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The President\nextended an invitation to Mr. Dereck Joubert to become a member of annual\npresidential round table.\n\nMr. Dereck Joubert, on his part, informed the President that he was impressed\nby Uganda\u2019s strategy of re-growing forests as a way of conserving the environment.\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
