{"id":4961,"date":"2018-07-20T13:35:51","date_gmt":"2018-07-20T10:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=4961"},"modified":"2018-07-20T13:35:51","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T10:35:51","slug":"google-hit-with-e4-3bn-android-fine-from-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2018\/07\/20\/google-hit-with-e4-3bn-android-fine-from-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Google hit with \u20ac4.3bn Android fine from EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Google has been fined a record \u20ac4.34bn ($5bn; \u00a33.9bn) over Android.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission said the firm\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-18-4581_en.htm\">had used the mobile operating system<\/a>to illegally &#8220;cement its dominant position&#8221; in search.<\/p>\n<p>The firm&#8217;s parent Alphabet has been given 90 days to change its business practices or face further penalties of up to 5% of its average global daily turnover.<\/p>\n<p>It has said it plans to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>However, it could easily afford the fine if required &#8211; its cash reserves\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/abc.xyz\/investor\/pdf\/20180423_alphabet_10Q.pdf\">totalled nearly $103bn at the end of March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference in Brussels, Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said consumers needed choice.<\/p>\n<p>And she suggested the ruling could lead manufacturers to sell smart devices using different versions of the Android operating system to Google&#8217;s, such as Amazon&#8217;s Fire OS, which she said they had been prevented from doing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will change the market place,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s chief executive Sundar Pichai has blogged in response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rapid innovation, wide choice, and falling prices are classic hallmarks of robust competition and Android has enabled all of them,&#8221;\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/around-the-globe\/google-europe\/android-has-created-more-choice-not-less\/\">he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s decision rejects the business model that supports Android, which has created more choice for everyone, not less.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Vestager previously fined Google \u20ac2.4bn ($2.8bn; \u00a32.1bn) over a separate probe into its shopping comparison service &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:62017TN0612&amp;from=EN\">a ruling the tech firm is in the process of appealing<\/a>\u00a0against.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, her team has a third investigation underway into Google&#8217;s advert-placing business AdSense<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>BBC<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google has been fined a record \u20ac4.34bn ($5bn; \u00a33.9bn) over Android.
