Museveni said.

A new chapter for Tooro

Nyabongo I, formerly Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, ascended the Tooro throne following the death of his predecessor, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27, 2026, aged 34, after a 31-year reign.

His coronation at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal on September 29 was presided over by President Museveni, who formally welcomed the new monarch and handed over the authority that the government had been exercising during the transition.

The installation followed a succession process in which the Babiito Royal Clan selected Kijanangoma before his endorsement by the Tooro Kingdom’s Supreme Council.

His accession, however, came amid disagreements within the royal family, with members of the late King Oyo’s family questioning the succession process and raising concerns about an alleged heir named in the late monarch’s will.

Despite the controversy, the kingdom proceeded with the coronation, ushering in a new reign under Nyabongo I.

In his maiden address as Omukama, the new king pledged to promote unity, protect Tooro’s cultural heritage and work with government and other institutions to advance peace and development.

Cultural institutions and national development

Wednesday’s engagement brings together traditional rulers at a time when government continues to emphasise the contribution of cultural institutions to national cohesion and development.

Uganda’s cultural institutions, including Tooro, Buganda, Bunyoro and Busoga, among others, retain considerable cultural and social influence, particularly through the preservation of customs, language, identity and traditional leadership.

Although they do not exercise political or administrative authority, the kingdoms remain important institutions in community mobilisation, cultural preservation and social development.

For Nyabongo I, the State House engagement provides an opportunity to join fellow traditional leaders in discussions with the President as he begins establishing his leadership and defining the direction of his reign.

It is also an important moment in his relationship with the central government, having taken over the Tooro throne barely five weeks ago.

The new King of Tooro, His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has made his first appearance at State House Entebbe since his coronation, joining President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other traditional leaders at a high-level Cultural Leaders Conference.
