The course is internationally certified by World Athletics.

The 2026 marathon route had a maximum elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level and an elevation gain of about 410 metres.

Although the entire course is on tarmac, the elevation changes provide a serious physical challenge for competitors, particularly as they approach the mountainous section of the race.

The opening section offers runners a relatively unusual experience.

Starting around the Equator, competitors head along the road towards Kasese with the landscape of Queen Elizabeth National Park around them.

The organisers describe the first approximately 20 kilometres as a visually striking section, with savannah, Lake George and the distant Rwenzori foothills forming part of the scenery.

For an athlete accustomed to conventional city marathons, the setting provides an entirely different race experience.

There are no towering buildings or dense urban crowds during the early part of the course.

Instead, runners move through a landscape associated with Uganda’s wildlife and tourism industry.

The route eventually brings competitors into Kasese town, where the character of the race changes.

From the open landscapes surrounding Queen Elizabeth National Park, athletes move into an urban environment before heading towards the mountains.

It is in this section that the race becomes increasingly demanding.

The road towards Kilembe brings runners closer to the Rwenzori foothills and introduces the climb that has become one of the most discussed features of the marathon.

The official race review conducted ahead of the 2026 edition identified the Kilembe climb as a major challenge, with approximately 270 metres of elevation gain.

The climb can significantly affect athletes who have attempted to maintain a fast pace during the opening kilometres.

After reaching the mountainous section, runners eventually turn back towards Kasese and the finish area.

The finish brings all four race categories together, creating a large celebration involving elite competitors, recreational runners, families, spectators and supporters.

The 21.1-kilometre Kilembe Half Marathon offers a shorter version of the experience.

It starts in Kasese town and takes participants towards the Rwenzori foothills.

The organisers list the half marathon’s maximum elevation at 1,200 metres above sea level, with an elevation gain of 270 metres.

Like the full marathon, the half marathon is internationally certified.

Its scenery has become one of its strongest selling points.

The organisers say the Kilembe Half Marathon has been recognised by USA Today among the world’s scenic half marathons, giving the race additional international visibility.

The shorter 10-kilometre race provides a different experience, taking runners around Kasese town.

It is designed for both experienced runners and participants looking for a less demanding introduction to the event.

The 5-kilometre Vibes Run, meanwhile, focuses more heavily on participation and entertainment.

The different distances therefore allow the marathon to attract a broad range of participants.

Elite athletes can compete for major prizes in the full and half marathons, while recreational runners, corporate groups, families and fitness enthusiasts can participate in the shorter events.

For Kasese, however, the route represents more than a sporting challenge.

It is also a tourism product.

Every kilometre exposes visitors to a different part of the region — from the Equator and Queen Elizabeth National Park to Kasese town and the Rwenzori foothills.

The Ministry of Tourism has identified this combination of athletics and natural attractions as one of the reasons the marathon has become an important sports tourism event.

The route also provides a powerful backdrop for international coverage.

Images of runners competing against the Rwenzori Mountains help distinguish the event from conventional road races.

That visual identity has become central to the marathon’s ambition of attracting international athletes and visitors.

The 2026 edition further strengthened the route’s international standing after the race became a World Athletics Label Road Race.

The course was officially measured as part of preparations for the event, with World Athletics-certified measurer Gavin Wright using calibrated bicycle-counter equipment. Race organisers also reviewed hydration stations, marshal positions, congestion points, transport and the finish area.

The result is a marathon in which the course itself is part of the attraction.

For competitors, it offers a demanding road race.

For tourists, it provides a journey through some of western Uganda’s most spectacular landscapes.

And for Kasese, it has become a powerful annual showcase of what the region can offer.

Few marathon routes offer athletes the opportunity to begin a race at the Equator, pass through a national park and finish with the dramatic Rwenzori Mountains dominating the horizon.
