The remains of the late Tooro King, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, will arrive in Uganda on Friday as the kingdom prepares to begin the final stages of mourning and traditional funeral rites for the monarch who died last week aged 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa) Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki confirmed the revised programme on Wednesday, saying the casket will be received at Entebbe International Airport before the remains are taken to Tooro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest announcement settles earlier uncertainty over the date of the king\u2019s return. Government officials had initially indicated that the body would arrive on Thursday, but Rwomiire has now confirmed that Friday is the official return date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the revised programme, President Yoweri Museveni is expected to receive the remains at Entebbe, pay his respects and condole with the royal family before the body is transported towards Tooro. The remains are expected to be taken to Kyegegwa District and thereafter proceed by road in a procession to Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The return will mark a major turning point in the mourning period, with the traditional funeral ceremonies expected to shift fully to Tooro under the authority of the kingdom’s customary institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before the body reaches Tooro, Parliament will on Thursday hold a special sitting to honour the late monarch and reflect on his contribution to the kingdom and Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parliament had already formally mourned King Oyo during its sitting on Tuesday, with Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth describing his death as a deeply painful loss to Tooro and the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen a king departs, it is not only a family that mourns, a kingdom mourns, a people mourn and the nation feels the loss,\u201d Oboth said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Members of Parliament observed a moment of silence for the late king, while the Speaker indicated that a motion would be brought before the House to pay tribute to his life and contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The special sitting is therefore expected to provide Parliament with an opportunity to formally record the nation’s tribute to a monarch whose reign spanned more than three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The funeral arrangements are also expected to bring renewed focus on the traditional authority of the Babiito royal clan, particularly the Musuuga, who has been placed at the centre of the cultural rites following King Oyo’s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tooro Kingdom recently issued protocols governing the funeral and succession process, placing the head of the Babiito royal clan, Charles Kamurasi, at the centre of the traditional arrangements. The resolutions were reached at a kingdom meeting held at Karuziika Palace on August 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The royal clan has separately clarified that the official mourning period, according to Tooro custom, begins when the king’s remains arrive at Karuziika Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arrangements have therefore created a distinction between the national mourning activities taking place in Kampala and the traditional rites that will begin once the king is returned to his ancestral home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
King Oyo died at approximately 10pm on Thursday, August 27, 2026, according to the official announcement issued by the Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had been receiving medical treatment in the United States, although the kingdom and his family have not publicly disclosed the specific cause of his death. International reports also confirmed that he died at the age of 34 following treatment abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His death came as a shock to many Ugandans because his health condition had not been widely known. Earlier on August 27, Rwomiire had informed the public that the king was in critical condition and appealed for prayers and goodwill for the monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hours later, the kingdom announced his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
King Oyo’s death brings to an end one of the most extraordinary royal stories in Uganda’s modern history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo became Omukama of Tooro following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was only three years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His accession on September 12, 1995 made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch, a distinction recognised by Guinness World Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because of his age, Oyo initially ruled under regents, with members of the royal family helping oversee the kingdom until he reached adulthood. He eventually assumed greater personal responsibility for the kingdom and became a prominent cultural figure in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over nearly 31 years on the throne, he evolved from the famous “boy king” whose coronation attracted international attention into a youthful monarch associated with cultural preservation, tourism, environmental conservation and development initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guinness World Records continues to list Oyo as the youngest reigning monarch, identifying him as the ruler of Tooro who was born in 1992 and assumed the throne at the age of three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oyo’s reign also unfolded against the backdrop of Uganda’s complicated history with traditional institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Uganda’s traditional kingdoms were abolished after independence before being restored in 1993 under the constitutional framework that recognises cultural institutions while denying them political power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tooro was among the kingdoms restored during that period, allowing the monarchy to resume its cultural role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kingdom itself traces its origins to Omukama Kaboyo Olimi I, who established Tooro after breaking away from Bunyoro. The Babiito dynasty has much deeper historical roots in the wider Kitara region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a result, Oyo’s role was never that of a political head of government. Instead, his influence rested largely in his position as a cultural leader and symbol of Tooro identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond the funeral, the biggest question facing Tooro is who will occupy the throne after Oyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Immediately after announcing the king’s death, Rwomiire said that King Oyo had left behind a prince who would serve as his heir, but that the identity would be revealed at the appropriate time in accordance with Tooro traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The succession question has since attracted intense attention within the kingdom, with the Babiito royal clan insisting on its traditional role in determining the next monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kingdom has now established a 21-member committee to participate in the process of identifying Oyo’s successor, while insisting that the institutions involved in funeral and succession matters operate under the authority of the Musuuga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This means that while the immediate priority is giving Oyo a befitting farewell, the royal establishment is simultaneously preparing for the transition to a new reign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For now, however, the focus remains on the return of the king’s remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Friday arrival will bring the monarch back to the kingdom he inherited as a three-year-old child and led for almost 31 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His journey from a toddler thrust onto one of Uganda’s oldest thrones to a mature cultural leader made King Oyo one of the country’s most recognisable traditional figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With Parliament preparing to honour him on Thursday and the Musuuga and Babiito royal clan preparing to take charge of the traditional rites once his remains reach Tooro, Uganda is now entering the final phase of a national farewell to a king whose life was intertwined with the modern history of the Tooro Kingdom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
