Suspends Import Of 10 Ugandan Alcoholic Brands, Orders Immediate Recall

Rwanda has temporarily suspended the importation of at least 10 alcoholic beverage brands manufactured in Uganda and ordered their immediate recall from the Rwandan market, in one of the biggest regulatory actions to affect Ugandan alcoholic exports in recent years.

In a public announcement issued on August 5, 2026, the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) directed importers, distributors and retailers to immediately stop distributing and selling 52 alcoholic beverage brands originating from several countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Burundi and Poland.

The regulator said the affected products are listed in Annex I of its notice and that the suspension takes immediate effect.

Ten Ugandan brands affected

According to the list released by Rwanda FDA, the Ugandan brands affected are:

Bond 7 Whisky – Uganda Breweries Limited

Campfire Gin – John Distillers (U) Ltd

Club 5 Gin – Glorrie Industries Limited

Tembo Liqueur – Glorrie Industries Limited

X5 Gin – John Distillers (U) Ltd

Jonney’s Gin – John Distillers (U) Ltd

X5 Liqueur – John Distillers (U) Ltd

Pan Master Whisky – John Distillers (U) Ltd

X5 Whisky – John Distillers (U) Ltd

Gilbey’s Flavored Gin – Uganda Breweries Limited

V&A Imp Cr Lqr – Uganda Breweries Limited

The Ugandan products appear alongside dozens of brands manufactured in India, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and Poland.

Immediate recall ordered

Under the directive, Rwanda FDA instructed all importers of the listed products to begin a full recall immediately.

Importers have been ordered to:

Initiate a complete recall of the affected products.

Direct distributors to retrieve the products from retailers and customers.

Return all recalled stock to importers.

Submit recall reports to Rwanda FDA within three working days of publication of the notice.

Distributors and retailers have also been instructed to immediately stop selling the affected alcoholic beverages and return any remaining stock to importers.

Consumers who possess any of the listed brands have also been advised to stop consuming them immediately.

Additionally, Rwanda FDA ordered that all advertising and promotional materials relating to the listed alcoholic beverages be removed without delay.

The authority warned that failure to comply with the directives would attract enforcement measures under Rwanda’s applicable regulatory laws.

No reasons given for individual brands

While the announcement cites Rwanda’s Food and Drugs Authority law as the legal basis for the action, it does not specify why each individual brand was suspended.

The regulator simply states that the products listed in Annex I are subject to a temporary suspension of importation and recall as regulatory enforcement continues.

The notice further indicates that additional lists of affected products may be issued in the future.

The absence of product-specific explanations is likely to raise questions among manufacturers, importers and consumers across the East African Community, particularly because several of the listed brands are well-known spirits sold in regional markets.

Major Ugandan manufacturers affected

The suspension affects products from some of Uganda’s established alcoholic beverage manufacturers.

John Distillers (U) Ltd

John Distillers appears to have suffered the biggest impact among Ugandan companies, with six brands listed:

X5 Gin

Jonney’s Gin

X5 Liqueur

Pan Master Whisky

X5 Whisky

Campfire Gin

The company is one of Uganda’s leading producers of spirits and has built a strong presence in regional export markets.

Uganda Breweries Limited

Uganda Breweries Limited also has several products affected, namely:

Bond 7 Whisky

Gilbey’s Flavored Gin

V&A Imp Cr Lqr

Uganda Breweries has historically exported alcoholic beverages to neighbouring East African markets, including Rwanda.

Glorrie Industries Limited

Glorrie Industries Limited has two products on the suspension list:

Club 5 Gin

Tembo Liqueur

Potential impact on Uganda’s exports

The temporary suspension could have implications for Uganda’s alcoholic beverage exports to Rwanda, one of the country’s important regional trading partners under the East African Community.

Manufacturers may now have to work with Rwandan importers and regulators to determine the steps required before the affected products can return to the market.

The recall could also create logistical and financial challenges involving transportation, warehousing, stock recovery and possible disposal or re-export of products already in circulation within Rwanda.

Importers will also bear the responsibility of collecting products from wholesalers, retailers and other distribution channels before submitting mandatory recall reports to the regulator.

Regional action

The suspension extends beyond Uganda.

The Rwanda FDA list includes alcoholic beverages manufactured in:

India

Kenya

Tanzania

Burundi

Poland

Uganda

Several Kenyan brands, including Kenya King Gin, Gilbeys Gin, Safari Gin, Sweet Berry Vodka and Avalon Premium Vodka, also appear on the list.

Tanzanian manufacturers account for another significant share of the affected products, while Indian manufacturers have the largest number of brands under suspension.

Industry awaits clarification

As of Thursday morning, there had been no immediate public response from the affected Ugandan manufacturers regarding the suspension or the recall.

Similarly, Rwanda FDA’s announcement does not indicate whether laboratory testing, documentation deficiencies, licensing issues, labelling concerns or other regulatory compliance matters prompted the action.

Industry stakeholders are expected to seek further clarification from Rwandan authorities as companies assess the commercial implications of the temporary suspension.

For now, the regulator’s directive remains in force, with all listed Ugandan alcoholic beverages barred from import into Rwanda pending further regulatory action.

Rwanda has temporarily suspended the importation of at least 10 alcoholic beverage brands manufactured in Uganda and ordered their
