The Government has issued a 60-day ultimatum to bus operators across Uganda to present their vehicles for mandatory inspection, in a renewed push to improve road safety and curb accidents linked to mechanical failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, the exercise will run from April 8 to June 8, 2026, and will initially target buses operating along the Northern and Eastern routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The directive was announced by Fred Byamukama, Minister of State for Works and Transport in charge of Transport, who urged operators to voluntarily comply within the stipulated timeframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis initiative is aimed at ensuring that all buses on Ugandan roads are safe and fit for public transport,\u201d Byamukama said, emphasizing the government\u2019s commitment to protecting passengers and other road users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities say the inspection campaign is part of broader efforts to tackle the rising number of road crashes, many of which have been attributed to poor vehicle condition and inadequate maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry further revealed that the inspection program will later be expanded to cover trucks and trailers, signaling a comprehensive approach to improving vehicle safety standards across the transport sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
