The Bank of Uganda (BoU) has granted an operating license to Pearl Bank Uganda Limited, formerly known as PostBank Uganda, officially allowing the institution to operate under its new name and brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The license was presented to the Bank\u2019s Managing Director, Julius Kakeeto, by BoU Governor, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, marking a symbolic milestone in the bank\u2019s rebranding journey and formal transition from PostBank to Pearl Bank Uganda Limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This regulatory approval follows the bank\u2019s five-year transformation strategy and its elevation to a Tier 1 Commercial Banking License in December 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Governor Atingi-Ego congratulated the bank on the rebrand, praising its innovative approach to financial inclusion, particularly through the Wendi mobile wallet, which has expanded access to financial services for many Ugandans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BoU will continue to oversee Pearl Bank Uganda to ensure it operates securely and meets regulatory standards, enabling the delivery of diverse financial services efficiently and reliably, thereby strengthening public trust and supporting economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rebrand is a core component of the bank\u2019s corporate strategy aimed at enhancing profitability while generating economic and social impact. Key priorities include promoting sustainable financial inclusion and supporting entrepreneurship, particularly among SMEs in the agricultural value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pearl Bank Uganda\u2019s roots stretch back to 1926 as the Post Office Savings Department, later incorporated as PostBank Uganda Limited in 1998 after separating from the Uganda Posts and Telecommunications Corporation. Over the years, it has achieved significant milestones, including Kakeeto\u2019s appointment in October 2019, which accelerated reforms such as branch expansion, digital transformation, strengthened agency banking, and deeper penetration into local enterprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A landmark achievement came in 2023 with the launch of the Wendi mobile wallet, a digital platform designed to enhance financial inclusion by enabling Ugandans to save, transfer funds domestically and internationally, pay utilities, and empower SACCOs nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bank has also maintained strong financial performance over the past five years, with steady growth in profitability and assets. While operating as PostBank Uganda, it received recognition from BoU as the Overall Best Performing Bank under the Small Business Recovery Fund (SBRF) & Agricultural Credit Facility (ACF) Awards in May 2025, alongside a sustainability certification from the European Organisation for Sustainable Development in September 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision to rebrand to Pearl Bank Uganda Limited, announced in June 2025, reflects Uganda\u2019s identity as the \u201cPearl of Africa.\u201d The new license aligns with the bank\u2019s tagline, \u201cGrow. Prosper,\u201d embodying its broader mission of fostering prosperity for all Ugandans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
