{"id":40676,"date":"2025-09-16T20:37:52","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T17:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=40676"},"modified":"2025-09-16T20:38:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T17:38:00","slug":"splm-io-declares-south-sudan-government-illegitimate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/16\/splm-io-declares-south-sudan-government-illegitimate\/","title":{"rendered":"SPLM-IO Declares South Sudan Government Illegitimate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By:\u00a0Chol Mawel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Sudan\u2019s main opposition group, the SPLM-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), has declared the unity government \u201ccollapsed\u201d and illegitimate, pledging to pursue \u201cregime change\u201d following the suspension and indictment of its leader, First Vice President Riek Machar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement issued Monday, the SPLM-IO said the government formed under the 2018 peace agreement has been \u201cdestroyed,\u201d accusing President Salva Kiir\u2019s faction of orchestrating a \u201csetup of dictatorship\u201d and \u201cstate capture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The declaration came after a three-day virtual meeting of the movement\u2019s political and military leadership, convened in response to Machar\u2019s suspension and charges linked to a militia attack in Nasir. Acting chairman Oyet Nathaniel Pierino described the indictment as a \u201cpolitically motivated witch-hunt\u201d and a violation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SPLM-IO said Machar\u2019s suspension halts the implementation of the peace accord\u2019s political and security provisions, rendering the transitional government illegitimate. The resolution urged supporters to \u201creport for National Service\u201d and to use \u201call means available to regain their country and sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement did not specify whether SPLM-IO members would withdraw from government structures.
