He emphasized the inviolability of the presumption of innocence and warned against punitive actions prior to a lawful conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo citizen should be subjected to any punishment unless found guilty after due process in the courts of law,\u201d Mao said, describing the practice of presenting tortured and illegally detained suspects in court as \u201can abuse of judicial processes\u201d and a \u201cviolation of suspects&#8217; constitutional rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citing precedent, Mao referenced the case of <em>Uganda vs. Robert Ssekabira and 10 others<\/em>, in which Justice Ralph Ochan ruled to terminate proceedings marred by egregious human rights abuses, underscoring the judiciary&#8217;s duty to protect constitutional freedoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Justice Minister also revealed that the Ministry has finalized a National Action Plan for Human Rights, which is pending Cabinet approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Additionally, a Cabinet Standing Committee on Human Rights is currently in place to provide redress through official channels.
