In a statement released on World Press Freedom Day, Mayiga hailed journalists and media professionals for their tireless dedication to truth and public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA free and responsible press is the cornerstone of any democratic society. Let us protect it, support it, and allow it to thrive,\u201d Mayiga said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He expressed appreciation for the efforts of journalists who work with \u201cdedication, passion and love,\u201d and urged Ugandan authorities, particularly the security forces, to uphold the rights of the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI urge security forces in Uganda to respect the rights of members of the press because acts of violence against journalists will impair freedom and hinder development,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
