Since the release of the first single, Circumference<\/em>, from his highly anticipated album Break the Chains<\/em>, Ugandan music sensation Bebe Cool has been a man on a mission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a career that spans decades and a personal journey marked by resilience, he continues to solidify his place on both the local and international music scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the success of his second single, Motivation<\/em>, Bebe Cool has been on a roll. Recently, he took his story to the global stage in an exclusive interview with UK-based Nigerian media personality DJ Edu on the BBC podcast This is Africa<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the candid discussion, he delved into his musical origins, the struggles he endured, and the life-threatening experiences that shaped his resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humble Beginnings and the Kenyan Breakthrough<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bebe Cool\u2019s journey in music began with a dream and an unwavering determination to make it big. His ambitions led him to Kenya, where he sought out renowned producer Ted Josiah. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, despite obtaining Josiah\u2019s contact information, fate had different plans\u2014he never got the chance to meet him. Stranded in a foreign land, he found solace in the kindness of strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI ended up living with a security guard,\u201d Bebe Cool recalled. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy, but I knew I had to keep pushing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His persistence paid off when he crossed paths with a man named Mohammed, who owned a private recording studio. Mohammed welcomed Bebe Cool and asked about his aspirations. When Bebe revealed that he was a singer, Mohammed put him to the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had a CD with eleven instrumentals. He told me to freestyle, and I did. After listening, he was impressed and told me to find a producer so I could come and record,\u201d Bebe Cool said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t long before he connected with Lucas Bikedo, one of the founders of Ogopa Deejays, a collective that would play a pivotal role in shaping East African music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This meeting marked a turning point in his career. He began gaining popularity in Kenya by performing at various Miss Kenya<\/em> pageants, gradually building a name for himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real breakthrough, however, came when he teamed up with Redsan and Jose Chameleone to form the first Bashment Crew<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redefining East African Music<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As Bebe Cool\u2019s career flourished, he later collaborated with the iconic duo Necessary Noize<\/em>\u2014Nazizi and Wyre. Together, they created music that was unlike anything Kenya had heard before. Songs like Fire Anthem<\/em>, Combination<\/em>, and Africa Unite<\/em> became anthems, earning them a loyal fan base across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen Bebe Cool joined forces with Nazizi and Wyre, they created a sound that was fresh and powerful. It brought a whole new energy to the music scene,\u201d DJ Edu remarked during the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surviving a Gunshot and a Bomb Attack<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While his career soared, Bebe Cool also faced harrowing experiences that tested his resilience. He recounted the terrifying night he was shot, an incident that could have ended his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all began when he noticed a heated exchange between a group of artists from the Good Lyfe<\/em> crew and a police officer. Concerned, Bebe Cool, along with some friends, approached the scene. Unfortunately, the police officer misinterpreted their intentions, assuming they were there to interfere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSince I always move with security, I sent my man to talk to him, police officer to police officer. But without hesitation, he opened fire,\u201d Bebe Cool recounted. \u201cIt was traumatic. Five people were injured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The injuries he sustained left him wheelchair-bound for almost a year. He had to undergo surgery and a long, painful recovery. But that wasn\u2019t the only time he narrowly escaped death. A few months later, another tragedy struck\u2014this time at the Kyadondo Rugby Club<\/em>, where he had just performed at a World Cup viewing party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bombs detonated at the venue, causing devastation and loss of life. Bebe Cool was fortunate to make it out alive, but the psychological scars remained. Despite these traumatic events, he never received therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur country wasn\u2019t at that level yet,\u201d he explained. \u201cBut I told myself, let me use this pain to become a stronger person. And yes, these experiences made me stronger at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Break the Chains: A New Musical Era<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Through all his trials, Bebe Cool has remained dedicated to his craft. His latest album, Break the Chains<\/em>, represents a new chapter in his journey. Embracing Afrobeats, he aims to bring Ugandan music to the global stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI decided to do Afrobeats because that\u2019s what the world is listening to,\u201d he said. \u201cAs an artist representing Uganda, I have to embrace the sound and take our music beyond borders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From sleeping on floors in Kenya to surviving bullets and bomb blasts, Bebe Cool\u2019s story is one of perseverance, passion, and unbreakable spirit.
