A group of medical professionals has petitioned the government to grant bail to Dr. Kizza Besigye, allowing him access to specialized healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a press statement released yesterday, Dr. Ekwaro Obuku, former president of the Uganda Medical Association, stated that over 1,400 medical practitioners\u2014including doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and allied health professionals\u2014signed the petition titled \u201cPetition for Dr. Besigye\u2019s Medical Release.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The petitioners emphasized that Dr. Besigye, a respected member of the medical community, is part of the “Elders Forum of our medical fraternity.\u201d<\/strong> Dr. Obuku included a sample list of petitioners with 33 names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The petition calls for Dr. Besigye\u2019s immediate release on bail<\/strong> due to his fragile health condition in Luzira Maximum Prison. It demands that he be allowed to receive specialized medical care<\/strong> from doctors of his choice, as is standard in best medical practices for prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, holds a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MB.ChB) from Makerere University<\/strong> and previously served as President Museveni\u2019s physician during the Bush War (1981\u20131986).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Besigye was arrested in November<\/strong> while in Nairobi, Kenya, and brought back to Uganda, where he was charged with security-related offences and treachery<\/strong> before a military court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n His detention has sparked national debate on judicial independence<\/strong>, particularly after the Supreme Court ruled last month that civilians should not be tried in military courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Media reports suggest that Dr. Besigye had been on a hunger strike<\/strong> in protest against his detention, worsening his already fragile condition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n However, his lawyer, Erias Lukwago, confirmed on Friday<\/strong> that Dr. Besigye has since ended the strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Obuku noted that while Besigye is no longer on hunger strike, his body remains weak<\/strong> following the prolonged period without food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Friday<\/strong>, a frail Dr. Besigye appeared before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate\u2019s Court<\/strong> for the formal commencement of his trial in a civilian court. Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi<\/strong> read out treason charges<\/strong> against him, his aide Obeid Lutale, and UPDF soldier Capt.
