The Ugandan government has vowed to maintain its self-sufficiency after the United States suspended its aid support to Uganda and several other African nations. The U.S. decision, part of broader changes under its new administration, included halting funding to various organizations operating in Uganda. In response, Minister of Information and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, reassured citizens that Uganda can continue to sustain itself without relying on U.S. assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is not our view as government that our survival does and should not entirely depend on external support,\u201d Baryomunsi stated. “We are progressively building our own internal capacity to sustain these programs.\u201d The minister further explained that vital sectors such as health, which have traditionally relied on U.S. funds, would be prioritized to minimize disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, opposition figures argue that the government must address internal financial inefficiencies, including corruption and unnecessary spending, to bridge the gap left by the U.S. withdrawal. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Shadow Minister for Finance, criticized the government’s approach, stressing that \u201cthings like special meals need to be scrapped from the budget,\u201d urging a reevaluation of unnecessary expenditures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ssemujju also called on Parliament to endorse budget adjustments that focus on essential services rather than luxury items. \u201cThe Ministry of Finance needs to align the budget to finance priorities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite these concerns, the government has sought to reassure the public, stating that Uganda\u2019s financial future does not hinge solely on U.S. funding. The suspension follows a history of strained relations, including the 2021 shutdown of the Democratic Governance Facility (DGF), a key funder for many civil society organizations in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
