The National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu on Tuesday failed to appear before the Uganda Human Rights Commission tribunal to defend himself on the complaints he lodged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2018 Kyagulanyi petitioned the commission after the police banned him from holding music concerts. He argued that the ban was an infringement of his rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Tuesday, Kyagulanyi was expected to appear before the four-member commission panel led by the UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya but made no show. Other members are Lamex Omara Anita, Shifrah Lukwago, and Simeo Nsubuga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His lawyer Benjamin Katana told the Commission that Kyagulanyi was attending to party duties and could not appear. He asked the commission to adjourn the hearing to Friday when Kyagulanyi will appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPrior to receiving today\u2019s invitation by the tribunal, our client had already committed himself to party business outside town, which he could not miss as a party leader. We are here to ask for a two days adjournment. On Friday he will be physically present,\u201d He said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Katana, since the Commission has failed to hear the case for more than four years, it would be unfair not to reschedule the appointment to Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Wangadya, said that the tribunal had a timeline of up to Thursday to hear the cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe tribunal is set to finish its hearing on Thursday, yet a petitioner is asking for one day past the set program. The tribunal is yet to make a decision about this case, and the stand will be communicated.\u201d She said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Monday, Dr. Kizza Besigye appeared before the tribunal and accused the police of tormenting him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besigye is seeking compensation for the alleged torture and house detention shortly after the contested in the 2016 presidential elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
