{"id":34227,"date":"2022-12-16T11:25:43","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T08:25:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=34227"},"modified":"2022-12-16T11:25:49","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T08:25:49","slug":"woman-jailed-for-kissing-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/16\/woman-jailed-for-kissing-man\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman Jailed For Kissing Man"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Sudanese woman charged with adultery has had her life spared and will instead spend six months behind bars after she admitted to kissing a man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 20-year-old was initially sentenced to death by stoning, sparking an international outcry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was arrested by police after her cousin killed her boyfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) described the initial penalty as a &#8220;grave violation of international law&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The divorcee was sentenced to death after she was found guilty of adultery by a court in the city of Kosti, in Sudan&#8217;s White Nile state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following international condemnation, the White Nile state court retried the case. Ultimately, the presiding judge changed the charge from &#8220;adultery&#8221; to an &#8220;obscene act&#8221; which meant she would instead serve prison time for her actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She confessed in court to being with a man and admitted that the pair had kissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her lawyer, Intisar Abdullah, said the judge &#8220;didn&#8217;t have many options but to convict her&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The thing is she confessed at the court that she was with a man, she is very young and she doesn&#8217;t know the complications of the case,&#8221; the lawyertold the BBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The woman had been free on bail but has now gone to prison to start her sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ACJPS said she was not allowed a lawyer in the initial case, and procedural errors led to the stoning sentence being overturned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sudan still imposes the death penalty for some&nbsp;<em>hudud&nbsp;<\/em>crimes &#8211; offences specified by Allah in the Quran, including theft and adultery. In Sudanese law they carry penalties such as flogging, the amputation of hands and feet, hanging and stoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of stoning sentences in Sudan &#8211; laid predominantly against women &#8211; have been overturned at the High Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-63383361\">&nbsp;a government minister described the sentence as a &#8220;joke&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;but admitted that no government minister could intervene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sudan has been run by a military junta since a coup in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>BBC News Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Sudanese woman charged with adultery has had her life spared and will instead spend six months behind bars after she admitted to kissing a man.
