Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among has asked concerned government officials to push for speedy trial of Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana and the Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She expressed displeasure that the two MPs have spent a year under incarceration, which has debarred their respective constituencies representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs the head of the institution, all Members of Parliament here belong to the Speaker. My two members of Parliament make one year in Prison today,\u201d Among said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She requested the government to hasten trial of these members so that they go back and represent their constituencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the same vain, Leader of opposition Mathia Mpuuga conveyed his dissatisfaction with the Judiciary over to prosecute the MPs who were arrested in September 2021 over alleged killings greater Masaka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mpuuga warned that there is a syndicate plotting to keep MPs Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya in detention for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He called upon the house to intervene and ensure the legislators are freed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese two members will necessitate Parliament\u2019s special intervention. In my opinion, there is a conspiracy to keep them detained. The State has been unable to prosecute their case for a full year, and the judge has been changed; it is disheartening,\u201d Mpuuga said during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Anita Among on Wednesday, September 7, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
