{"id":32311,"date":"2022-08-10T11:19:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T08:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/?p=32311"},"modified":"2022-08-10T11:19:01","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T08:19:01","slug":"kenya-elections-2022-raila-odinga-william-ruto-in-tight-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ugmirror.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/10\/kenya-elections-2022-raila-odinga-william-ruto-in-tight-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya Elections 2022: Raila Odinga &#038; William Ruto In Tight Race"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Provisional results suggest a tight presidential race in Kenya between Deputy President William Ruto and former prime minister Raila Odinga.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.iebc.or.ke\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90% of results posted<\/a>&nbsp;from thousands of individual districts, local tallies of the raw data suggest little separates the pair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However it could be several days before the official result is known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This vote follows an intense campaign dominated by debates about living costs, unemployment and corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turnout is estimated at around 60%, well short of the 80% in the last election five years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A largely peaceful election day was marred by logistical delays and a failure of the identification kit in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Baba-v-Hustler\">Baba v Hustler<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two frontrunners in the presidential race are seasoned politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Odinga, 77, &#8211; a long-serving opposition leader, nicknamed Baba (&#8220;father&#8221;) by his supporters, is running for president for a fifth time. Mr Ruto, 55, who has tried to emphasise his connection with ordinary Kenyans by calling himself a &#8220;hustler&#8221;, is taking his first stab at the presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two other candidates &#8211; David Mwaure and George Wajackoya &#8211; are also in the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta is backing Mr Odinga, a foe turned ally, to succeed him, after a falling out with Mr Ruto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To win the presidential race in the first round, a candidate needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>more than half of all the votes cast across the country<\/li><li>at least 25% of the votes cast in a minimum of 24 counties.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After counting the votes, local officials take a photo of the final tally sheet and send the image to both the constituency and national tallying centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The media, political parties and civil society groups have been compiling their own tallies using these final results declared at the more than 40,000 polling stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But only the electoral commission can declare the winner of the presidential election after verifying the physical and digital forms sent to the national tallying centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has seven days to announce the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>BBC News Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Provisional results suggest a tight presidential race in Kenya between Deputy President William Ruto and former prime minister Raila Odinga.
